Old Friends and New Ventures

It has been awhile since I've written....sorry.  Mom had her surgery on January 9, and while she is recovering well, this surgery has left her much more dependent on help than the last one.  Needless to say, I've been a very busy person since January!  But is is a wonderful blessing to see Mom walking and not in as much pain as before.  So now, on to writing about the title of this entry.  We have some very dear friends....more like family....that we were able to go visit this weekend.  They live in Oklahoma and if you'll look at my page you will notice that they are the ones who are Tanglewood Porch Farm. We went to see our friends and attend the 1st Annual Tanglewood Porch Farm Horse Seminar.  They board, train, and teach.  Becky has been doing this for many years and is very good at what she does.  There were 25 students at the first seminar and she has students asking when the next seminar will be.  While I'm not as knowledgeable as she is I was glad to be able to be there to help her get a few last minute things organized.   Since we are novice horse owners we felt that it was very much worth our time to drive the distance to educate ourselves so that we will be good owners.  We have wanted to learn more about partnering with our horses.  Many people are "old school" and "break" their horses, but we have been learning how to join-up with your horse and have a deeper, more meaningful relationship with your horse.  That is what we learned at the seminar.  Fortunately I was able to learn some of this from my friend this weekend.  We came home tired and our heads were swimming a bit, but it was a great starting point and we are eager to continue our learning process.  I will have pictures posted also.  While I wish I had time to write more, this is at least a starting point.   Enjoy the pictures and as always.....thanks for stopping in!

Winter Adventures

While winter isn't usually the time for much activity, we are keeping busy here at the farm.  From the pictures posted you can see that we have new horses here.  It's been wonderful seeing the corrals being put to good use.  We have 3 mares with foals and one stallion.  We were amazed to find out that the stallion we are boarding is a descendent from Impressive, Poco Bueno, and Doc Bar...which are all very well known cutting and cattle horses.  We are trying to find good homes for all the horses and expect at least 10-12 more horses possibly this weekend.  We are still trying to find papers on all the brood mares, but know that they are all registered Paints and Quarter Horses.  All the foals are out of the stud that we have and are registered also.  Hanna has picked out her favorite and bought a halter and lead rope yesterday.  It's been fun getting to know the horses and let them get use to us.  They were range horses and not use to much contact from people.  This is one of our adventures going on right now.  Another adventure is going to be soap making.  Here in the next few weeks I'll have my ingredients and should have my first batch of soap!  YEA!  I may also try my hand at some salt scrubs as they are so wonderful for dry skin and feet in the winter time.  It is busy now with all the new things going on along with still being at mom's every day to help with the house and getting her to physical therapy 3 x's a week, but it's that good busy that brings a sense of satisfaction.  Life has so much to offer if only we would take advantage of those opportunities to try new things and learn.  We should never become complacent.  Too much of the world is complacent....people get in a rut and forget that by trying new things and "stretching" our imaginations it helps to keep us going.  We are never to old to learn something new or to try something new.  Take this day to challenge yourself to do something different......be daring!  Enjoy all the diversity and creativity that is out there waiting to be found!  Enjoy a winter adventure!  Thanks as always for stopping in!  ~Cherri~

Snowfall and Horses

In Kansas we have our fair share of crazy weather.  Western Kansas and Colorado were hit 3 weeks in a row with heavy snows and ice that wreaked havoc on farmers and left thousands without electricity.  Texas and Oklahoma just got slammed last week with a major ice storm also.  Where we are at, we got very little from any of those storms.  Last weekend we did get sleet that fell for almost 2 hours solid.  Sleet is better than ice in that it doesn't really stick to the trees or power lines, but it did make road travel slow and treacherous.  When the dirt roads are sheets of ice, you know it's bad.  Very seldom do we get a pretty snow, but we got one yesterday!  It came up from the south so it's a good wet snow, perfect for snowmen and snowforts!  We got about 7" here at the farm.  It was enough to cover my lowest bed on my 3 tiered raised bed.  While it's a pain to drive in, it sure is pretty and we definitely need the moisture.  Each season brings a combination of positive and what seem to be negative things with it.  It is a balance that sometimes doesn't seem so balanced.  It's what we all deal with not just with the weather, but with life.  With the negative things that we experience, we have to work very hard sometimes at trying to see what the positive is in the situation.  Many times there seems to be nothing good.  If we come out of those trying difficulties that is a positive....we have learned how to endure and whether it feels like it or not, we are stronger because we have simply gotten through the trial and hopefully we have learned something about ourselves and developed qualities that will help us get through the next trial.....and unfortunately there usually is a next trial.  But again, there is that delicate balance that always comes with each season...not just weather wise but with the seasons of our lives.  Lately we have been experiencing trialsome seasons along with many of our friends.  Cancer is striking many people we know along with other illnesses that leave them unable to work or care for their families like they want to.  2 weeks ago a dear friend in Goodland was out working his cattle and horses trying to get hay to them because of the cold and ice, and began to not feel well, so his son told him to go rest a minute in the truck....when his son got back to the truck he found his dad dead.  2 days after the memorial service the widow was not feeling well and in severe pain so the kids took her to the Dr. and found out that she has cancer.  It is very severe and cannot be operated on.  At this point they don't even think that radiation or chemotherapy is going to help.  It has left the family devastated and working hard to take care of their surviving parent and a farm with 23 head of horses and about 160 head of cattle.  This is where friends become the supportive lifeline that helps us to endure any situation.  We have rallied around these people and are doing what we can to help.  This weekend, despite the cold, ice, and snow that we have received, we worked getting our 3 very old, but still useful corrals back into shape so that we can keep the horses here until they can find good homes.  We have 10-12 head arriving this weekend and probably next weekend the rest will arrive.  It will be good to see this farm flourishing again and the corrals being used instead of looking sad and empty.  While we didn't know Buck and Jo that well, we do know their kids and are glad that there is something we can do to help.  We are bound together, not just because they are are friends, but we share a common faith...a faith that will strengthen us and help us to be supportive and endure this trial.  Snowfall and Horses....it's a title that evokes thoughts of beauty and serenity.  The snow is beautiful!  To see horses in our corrals with the snowfall....that too will be a beautiful sight!  With each though have come stress, and a need for strength and endurance.  I'll post pictures of the beauty that will be ours to enjoy and that will help us also to get through this day and days to come!  Thanks as always for stopping by!  ~Cherri~

Homecoming

Today is a good day!  Mom is coming home from her surgery a week ago.  She still has much healing to do, but it will be nice to have her home.  It will take at least 6 full months to see if there is any improvement in her legs.....until then we'll be patient and continue to pray that at least the pain will not be as severe.  This was a much harder surgery than the first one and recovery was longer for mom.  They sent her up to rehab to help her learn how to do things differently since her balance is so bad and she can't bend, lift, or twist, for 6-8 weeks.  It is going to be a long haul for everyone, but we have "power beyond what is normal" to accomplish all things and this too.  It would be nice to have another sibling to help share the responsibility of caring for my mom, but I try not to think of it in those terms too much.   I try to view it as a privilege to be able to give back to my mom for all the years of caring for me.  I am thankful that I am close by and able to help.  I'm also blessed that I still have my mom....I realize that in itself is the biggest blessing of all!
I have some new ideas rolling around in my head for bridal jewelry and other fun stuff for spring and summer.  It is "wedding" season and it's always fun to see what new ideas spring up.  I'll have pictures posted soon.
While we are covered with snow and in the grips of single digit temps, I love seeing all the new gardening catalogs and look forward to adding to our garden in the springtime.  There is much to keep us busy and happy and while there are trials, each day brings new joy and hopefulness for better days ahead!  As always, thanks for stopping in!  ~Cherri~

A New Year and New Pictures

Another year has come and gone.....how quickly time does fly.  It seems the older we get, the quicker it goes.  It was just a year ago that my mom was returning home from her first surgery and we are now waiting anxiously for her to be done with the second one which will be on January 9th.  We are hopeful that this will at least provide her more stability in her spine and alleviate the pain.  Between helping my mom, homeschooling, taking care of my own home and farm, and trying to keep a budding jewelry business growing, I enjoyed a very busy day on Saturday doing make-up for a wedding.  I had already done the jewelry and was glad to be able to help with getting the girls all ready for the "big day".   It was nice to be able to share in this event.....I have known Sara's family since before she was born and it was exciting to be a part of most special day after having known her her whole life.  She and Kael make a great couple and I'm sure that they will be very happy together.  Below are some photos from the wedding....I'm not sure how well you'll be able to see the jewelry, but I'll see if I have more pics of them.  I'm still working on learning more about a website and will hopefully be making that a reality very early in this new year.  I'll keep you all posted.   I'll try and be better about writing more often....but thanks for hanging in there and as always for stopping by!  ~Cherri~
The first pictures are of the necklaces that the bridesmaids all wore.  The third picture is of the brides jewelry. The picture of the jewelry with the black pearl, cream pearls, and garnet was a set I made for my oldest daughter for a special occasion. The rest of the pictures are before and after photos.  Thanks again!
